The SCDNR routinely employs such sampling techniques as electrofishing, gill nets and trap nets to monitor the population status of a number of the lake’s fish species including, largemouth bass, striped bass and crappie. The information is used to evaluate age, growth, condition and recruitment.
Lake Murray’s striped bass fishery is maintained via annual stockings of fingerling striped bass. Each spring approximately 1 million are stocked throughout the lake. They reach harvest size, 21 inches, at about three years of age
The SCDNR maintains 24 fish attractors on Lake Murray. The habitat created by these “brush piles” concentrates a number of gamefish species and provides enhanced fishing opportunities for anglers. The SCDNR routinely refurbishes the sites which are marked by buoys.
Lake Murray is a 41-mile-long, 50,000-acre lake created by the Saluda Dam. The dam was completed in 1930 and was the world’s largest earthen dam at the time of its completion. The lake was named after its chief engineer William S. Murray. The lake is a short 30-minute drive west of Columbia, South Carolina, and just over an hour’s drive from Augusta, Georgia.
